NGO programs in this field are focused on rehabilitation efforts. NGOs such as Saathi and Sath Sath run residential treatment programs for children addicted to glue sniffing. A lot of other NGOs have initiated awareness raising programs that inform street children about the dangers of such behavior. Other NGOs such as Child Workers in Nepal (CWIN) that act as watchdogs to the government, engage in research and campaign against drug abuse. An NGO in Bali has initiated a peer education program among street children addicted to drug abuse. Both NGO and government efforts in the area of drug use within Nepal have been concentrated in the countryside. Most of the Cannabis (which is the primary drug in Nepal) is manufactured and sold in the countryside. Due to this, glue sniffing which is a largely urban phenomenon among street children in Katmandu has not received much attention. There is also a significant gap in identification of high-risk children and prevention programs within Katmandu.
The following are the recommendations by street children as laid out in the survey conducted by CWIN assessing the rate of drug use among street children:
Society
- If any shopkeeper sells these substances to children, they should be reported to the police. - Some children said that if all citizens come together and try to stop those who sell these kinds of substance to children, the problem would be solved. - Society should understand children's problems and try to help children at risk.
Social Organization
- Organizations should find them work so they can stay busy and don't get into drugs and alcohol. - Social organizations should give innovative training to children so that they can learn how to be self-reliant and don't get frustrated in life.
Government
- The Government should close down all factories which produce and sell dendrite and other such substances. - The substance should not be sold to children or, if this occurs, the shops which do sell these substances to children should be asked to shut down. - The government should make shopkeepers aware of the effects of dendrite so that they will not sell these substances to children. - The government should provide the children who live on the streets with a safe home, good care and a nice playground. Some children even said that the government should provide them with good education facilities and better employment opportunities at their place of origin. - The government should try to end the exploitation of children. This is one of the main causes of being a street child. - Corrupt police officers should be punished, and in particular those who take bribes and release people who have been caught selling substances to children.
