80 Young children, all victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, could not control their joy as they moved into their new home, a large, spacious and more confortable one than the cramped conditions of their former shelter. The new home, which is called Baan Amphawa is one of the only three shelters in Bangkok that provides refuge to children to domestic and sexual abuse. Though the number of children affected by these forms of abuse is steadily increasing in Bangkok, the number of homes that are available to them remain at three.
At least 80 percent of the children living in this home are girls between the ages of 7-12 years. Many were victims of domestic violence, while others had been abused by members of their families, neighbours, and authority figures like teachers, police officers and monks.
In order to make Ban Amphawa a second home for these children who deserve nothing but the best, the home has plans to build a sports center for cultural and sporting activities, and a public library. Ban Amphawa is also known as a home that exudes a warm atmosphere more akin to a child's real home than a welfare facility. Care workers are literal mothers to the childen they live with.
