Bangladesh: Workshop on Child Labour

A participatory Workshop on "Child Labour Prevention" was held on the 3-4 July 2003. The workshop was organized by Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS- Women's Power for Development) in Chittagong, Bangladesh. NUS has been working with child labourers in Chittagong for several decades now. It's main programs include ruinning non-formal education centers for the child labourers in the Chittagong area and providing credit facilities to their parents so as to improve their economically conditions. The workshops focussed on the following areas of work that child labourers in Chittagong are normally involved in. These are child labourers in the garment industry, hotel boys, child servants in house holds, peddlers and other issues raised by child labourers who attended the workshop. The workshop focussed on understanding the day to day problems faced by the children and collected their recommendations in how to deal with the problems they faced. One of the severe problems that the children stated was that they were unable to attend non-formal education classes run by the organization since their employers prevented them from doing so. They said that they feared loosing their jobs if they violated the orders they were given. Therefore, they recommended the starting of more in-door activities within their place of work. They also recommended that they should be given permission to go for study tours and other field activities as part of the organizations non-formal education efforts. Another recommendation made by the children was for the provision of education scholarships to adolescent girls in urban slums mainly since the expenses involved in education cannot be borne by any family in dire economic circumstances. It is hoped that the recommendations made by the children in this workshop are taken up by authorities at all levels to assist the children in moving away from their lives of drudgery and give them an opportunity to enjoy their childhood.
