BANGLADESH: Human traffickers abducting school children [News]

Abduction of school going children by human traffickers in the guise of health workers has raised its head as a menace, new of its kinds, in the district , forcing the police and the school authorities to issue directives warning the students and their guardians. The school authorities have asked the student guardians to take special care about their children's arrival at and departure from the schools. The police have asked the student guardians to make quick communications with them on the slightest suspicion on any person to be a child trafficker. Police patrols have been intensified in Bogra town before the start of the classes at schools and after their break up. The police became alerted and took up these precautions after seven abducted children were rescued on July 16. Of the seven, three children Rabeya (10), daughter of Abdur Razzak, Mamota (9), daughter of Abdul Mazid and Zulekha (8), daughter of Zahiruddin were abducted by two female human traffickers in the guise of health workers from Hajipara area in Naogaon town on July 15. The two health workers lifted the three children into a rickshaw on the plea that they were being taken to a health centre for administering polio vaccines. When the rickshaw was passing by a hotel in Santahar, the children started crying. At their crying, the people nearby gathered there and the two human traffickers fled the scene, leaving the three children. Police on information rescued the children and sent them to their parents. The other four children Shima (8), daughter of Farid Uddin, Sadia (7), daughter of Salamat Ali of village Bonetghori, Swapna (8), daughter of Muzaffar of village Chowkbholakha and Sumaiyya (10), daughter of Yunus Ali of village Sekandrabad in Shibganj upazila were abducted on July 16. Two female human traffickers in the guise of health workers and wearing veils lifted seven children, students of Banain Government Primary School in Shibganj upazila on their way home. Three children among the seven fled away and the rest four Sima, Sadia, Swapna and Zulekha were lifted into a microbus. When the microbus reached Mahastangarh, the four children told the driver to halt the bus on the plea of drinking water. As soon as the bus stopped, the four children got down and started crying. The microbus had fled before the people rushed to the spot. Police on information rescued the four children and sent them to their parents. Police rescued a child from village Pabna in Badalgachi upazila in Naogaon district on July 16. The child, Azizul, son of Ashraful of Hilly Railway Colony was lifted on July 15. Two human traffickers in the guise of health workers and wearing veils lifted three female children into a microbus from in front of Dhunat Government Primacy School at 11 Am on July 17. The children are Urmi (7), daughter of Shahidul Islam, Mitu (7), daughter of Ganesh Roy and Mitu (9), daughter of Sarwardi of Office para area in Dhunat upazila town. When the microbus stopped near Sherpur Upazila Health Complex, the three children got down from it and ran away. The bus fled the scene when the local people rushed to the spot. On July 19, local people detained a woman wearing veil from in front of a school near Sherpur upazila town. Later, the woman. Shefali (32), daughter of Akbar Ali of village Tilakpara in Sadullahpur upazila of Gaibandha district was handed over to the police. Local people detained her as she was moving suspiciously in front of the school. Shefali in a statement to the police said that she went to Dhaka in quest of her husband who left home some months ago. Failing to find him, she boarded a Bogra bound bus from Dhaka and the driver drew her here. In the unknown place, she was moving to avail a bus bound for Gaibandha district. Finding contradiction in her statements, police sent Shefali to thana hajat. After the incident, police started searching the buses at important points on the Bogra- Dhaka highway. [The independent]
