There are 115 million children missing out on school. Most of them are girls, and most of them live in Commonwealth countries. World leaders promised to take action to end this injustice, but we are still a long way from achieving the promise of education for all by 2015. In the meantime, children throughout the world are missing out on the opportunities to overcome poverty which education could give them.
Education - especially girls' education - leads to fewer infant and maternal deaths, healthier families, and faster-growing economies. Oxfam GB is a member of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), a coalition of teachers' unions and development organisations in 180 countries, which is calling on world leaders to keep their promises to fund education for all.
There should be:
- no charges or hidden costs that prevent children going to school;
- greater effort to make it easier for girls to go to school;
- proper funding - and an expansion - of the Education for All Fast Track Initiative agreed by world leaders, so that every country with a sound education plan has the resources to put it into action.
