5 August 2004 : On July 30, a Burmese policeman raped a 13-year-old girl at Tamu, Sagaing division, near the border with India. The girl, the daughter of a vegetable farmer, was carrying vegetables near the Pahe Bridge when Private Maung Maung Oo of Tamu Police Station held her at gunpoint and raped her. A person familiar with the case stated that:
As the Tamu police had received their monthly wages, nine of them went out on the town that night, but after the others went back, the perpetrator Maung Maung Oo stayed out, and was drunk. After dragging off the young girl, he raped her in the plantation about 200 yards from the bridge he was arrested on August 1 while trying to flee.
Although the rapist has been arrested, the victim has not been extended any compensation. Furthermore, since August 1 to the date of the report, the family of the girl was being called to the police station for inquiries every morning, thereby disrupting their work and making life very difficult for them.
It is also reported that on July 29, members of the border security force situated at the same bridge attempted to rape another young woman after detaining her for allegedly carrying contraband goods. However, no investigation has been made into that case. [Source: Democratic Voice of Burma]
