Burma: Army officer kills 15-year-old girl [News]

A Burmese army captain named Aung Kyaw Moe from Meikhtila Airbase in central Burma kicked a 15 year old girl to death for lack of discipline. The girl, Than Than Soe, was hired by the officer and his wife Ma Shan Ma to be their housemaid with the consent of her widowed mother Daw Chet Phaung from Lyawphyukan village in Shante District.

On 26 July, Aung Kyaw Moe kicked Than Than Soe with army boots for making silly mistakes while babysitting until she died 'accidentally', according to his neighbours. In an attempt to cover up his crime, the officer dumped the corpse of the girl into a local lake and his attempt was discovered by the people who lived nearby.

Post mortem examinations revealed bruises on her neck and calves and broken pelvic bones. In order to make this murder appear to be a suicide, the perpetrator also poured poison into her throat, according to a doctor who doesn't want to be named.

The battalion commander Thura Tin Maung Win ordered all the parties concerned neither to leak the news out to the outside nor bring the case to the court, and, attempted to silence victim's family with 500,000 kyat compensation money. [Source: DVB, 13 August 2004]
